Fly strike is a veterinary emergency requiring immediate treatment, and delay in identifying and treating affected sheep prolongs severe suffering.
Fly strike causes extreme suffering - maggots consume living tissue, producing toxins that cause systemic illness. The smell and irritation of strike causes intense distress behaviour. A sheep with active fly strike is in acute pain and requires immediate treatment, yet the condition may go undetected in large flocks inspected infrequently. Daily inspection during fly season is a welfare obligation.
