Mixing unfamiliar pigs causes significant aggression and stress, and management strategies to reduce regrouping harm are an important welfare improvement area.
Regrouping stress affects virtually all commercially farmed pigs multiple times during their lives. Aggressive encounters cause injuries including ear, flank, and tail wounds that become infection risks. The fear and pain experienced during regrouping aggression are acute welfare harms. Management strategies that reduce regrouping stress can significantly reduce but not eliminate this welfare burden.
