Livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) are working animals whose welfare requires specific attention to socialisation, nutrition, health care, and appropriate matching to livestock.
Livestock guardian dogs occupy a unique welfare position as working animals with a strong genetic predisposition to their role. Well-placed LGDs that bond to livestock and have their physical needs met show positive welfare indicators of engagement, purpose, and low stress. Poorly matched or inadequately socialised dogs face welfare challenges from predator confrontations, territorial isolation, and owner neglect. LGDs in predator coexistence programmes deserve the same welfare attention as other working dogs.
