Zoo Sun Bear Enrichment and Natural Behaviour

Sun bears are the smallest bear species and highly specialised feeders whose welfare in captivity depends on enrichment that simulates their forest foraging ecology.

Key Facts

Sun bears have the longest tongue of any bear species, adapted for extracting honey and insects
They spend 6-8 hours daily foraging in wild forests across Southeast Asia
Sun bears are critically threatened by deforestation and illegal trade
Captive sun bears without appropriate enrichment show high rates of paw sucking stereotypy
Natural substrates, puzzle feeders, and foraging opportunities dramatically reduce stereotypy

Welfare Considerations

Sun bear welfare in captivity requires careful attention to their specialised feeding behaviour. Enrichment that engages their long tongue, manipulative ability, and olfactory foraging significantly improves psychological wellbeing.
