Wild Amphibian Road Crossing Welfare Solutions

Amphibian road casualties during annual migrations cause millions of deaths annually in the UK, and welfare-focused infrastructure reduces this significantly.

Key Facts

An estimated 20 tonnes of amphibians are killed on UK roads each spring migration
Common toads are particularly vulnerable, migrating as a group to natal breeding ponds
Toad Patrol volunteers collect and carry toads across roads at key crossing points
Amphibian tunnels under roads with drift fencing permanently redirect migrations safely
Some road sections see thousands of toads crossing over just a few nights each spring

Welfare Considerations

Road casualties cause acute death and injury to amphibians in large numbers. Volunteer patrols provide immediate welfare relief while permanent infrastructure solutions address the root cause. Both approaches have clear welfare value.

What You Can Do

Join your local Toad Patrol group during March-April migration season
Report amphibian road crossing hotspots to Froglife for monitoring
Advocate for amphibian tunnels and drift fencing on known crossing roads
Drive slowly on rural roads near ponds and rivers during spring evenings
