Tapirs are large, aquatic-capable ungulates whose welfare in captivity depends on water access, complex habitat, and appropriate social management.
Tapir welfare requires deep water for swimming and wallowing, complex terrestrial habitat for foraging and exploration, and carefully managed social housing that respects their largely solitary nature. Simple enclosures cause significant behavioural impoverishment.
