Flamingos are intensely social birds that breed communally and whose welfare depends on large flock sizes and appropriate nesting provision.
Flamingo welfare is inextricably linked to social complexity. Small groups cannot engage in the full range of colonial behaviour including mass display and communal nesting. Facilities with large naturalistic flocks achieve far better welfare and reproductive outcomes.
