Dairy Cow Automated Milking System Welfare

Automatic milking systems (AMS) change the welfare profile of dairy cattle, with some advantages and new challenges compared to conventional parlour milking.

Key Facts

AMS adoption in the UK has grown to over 20% of dairy herds
Cows milked by AMS visit the robot voluntarily, averaging 2-3 milkings per 24 hours
Lameness detection through gait analysis and weight bearing is possible in AMS systems
Mastitis detection algorithms in AMS can identify clinical cases earlier than human observation
Cows in AMS systems typically have lower cortisol levels during milking than parlour systems

Welfare Considerations

AMS changes the welfare calculus of milking by removing the twice-daily parlour routine but introducing new challenges around cow traffic management, lame cow detection, and technology dependency. The welfare benefits are real when systems are well managed.

What You Can Do

Support adoption of welfare-monitoring algorithms in AMS systems
Advocate for AMS management standards covering lame cow detection and response
Choose dairy from farms demonstrating effective use of AMS welfare monitoring
