Bonobos face significant threats including habitat loss, bushmeat hunting and conflict in their Democratic Republic of Congo range.
Individual bonobos suffer acutely from hunting, captivity and orphaning. Orphans in the bushmeat trade experience loss of social bonds, fear and often physical injury. Sanctuary rehabilitation addresses acute welfare but the root threats of habitat loss and hunting require sustained political and economic engagement.
