Outdoor pig production enables pigs to express their powerful natural rooting and foraging behaviour with significant welfare benefits.
Access to appropriate rooting substrate satisfies one of the strongest behavioural motivations in pigs. Outdoor pigs that can root, investigate and explore exhibit lower stress indicators and more positive welfare states than their indoor counterparts. Nose ringing negates much of this welfare benefit and should be avoided in welfare-focused outdoor systems.
