Hazel dormice have declined by over 70% in the UK due to woodland habitat loss and management changes.
Individual dormice face starvation if they cannot accumulate sufficient fat reserves before hibernation. Habitat loss forces longer foraging distances that increase energy expenditure. Woodland management changes that eliminate the shrub layer remove critical hazel nut and bramble food sources. Conservation welfare requires both habitat restoration and legal protection.
