Boar housing welfare is often overlooked but individual boars face specific welfare challenges in commercial pig production.
Boars kept in individual stalls without social contact or adequate space experience chronic frustration and stereotypic behaviours. The shift to AI has reduced the number of boars kept but AI stud boars may experience particularly poor welfare in intensive collection facilities. Welfare standards specific to boar housing are rarely included in farm assurance schemes.
