Capybaras are semi-aquatic mammals that require substantial water access for physical and psychological wellbeing in zoo settings.
Capybaras without adequate water access cannot regulate their body temperature effectively and cannot perform natural social and breeding behaviours that occur primarily in water. Groups kept in dry, land-only enclosures develop heat stress and exhibit restricted behavioural repertoires. Pools of adequate depth and size are essential welfare infrastructure.
