Cognitive dysfunction syndrome in older cats causes welfare problems that are often mistaken for normal ageing.
Cats with CDS experience confusion, anxiety and disorientation that causes significant suffering without the ability to communicate their distress. Night vocalisation represents acute anxiety and disorientation rather than attention-seeking. Recognition and management of CDS improves quality of life for affected cats and enables informed end-of-life decision-making by owners.
