Gibbons are highly specialised brachiators with complex locomotion needs that conventional zoo enclosures often fail to meet.
Gibbons in poorly designed enclosures show high rates of stereotypic behaviour, obesity and social dysfunction. Their bipedal walking on the ground is an indicator of inadequate overhead structure. Modern zoo design uses naturalistic rope networks and climbing structures to support near-normal activity budgets.
