Overriding dorsal spinous processes, known as kissing spine, is a common but often under-diagnosed source of back pain in horses.
Unrecognised back pain causes ongoing suffering and may lead to aversive training responses that compound both horse and rider welfare problems. Horses that buck or resist may be labelled difficult rather than painful. Early diagnosis and appropriate management - including rest, physiotherapy and tack fitting assessment - significantly improve welfare.
