Atlantic cod farming has expanded but faces significant welfare challenges distinct from salmon aquaculture.
Cod welfare presents different challenges from salmon: higher aggression, size variation within cohorts and deformity rates require active management. Spinal deformities and cataracts cause chronic welfare problems that reduce quality of life throughout the production cycle. Selective breeding for welfare traits and improved early-life husbandry can address these issues.
