Chimpanzees are highly social primates requiring complex group dynamics; isolation or undersized groups cause severe welfare problems.
Social deprivation is one of the most severe welfare harms for chimpanzees. Solitary housing causes depression, abnormal behaviours, self-injury and stereotypies. Even in small groups, incompatible social dynamics cause chronic stress. Investment in appropriate sanctuary space, careful group composition and long-term trauma-informed care is essential.
