Anaesthesia in fish is increasingly used for welfare procedures including vaccination, marking and health assessment.
Anaesthesia for fish welfare procedures is an important but underused tool. Unanaesthetised fish show stress responses during handling that include cortisol elevation, immune suppression and physiological disruption comparable to other vertebrates. Developing practical, approved anaesthetic protocols for aquaculture procedures is a priority for fish welfare improvement.
