Bivalve molluscs are farmed at enormous scale, but evidence for sentience and welfare is contested and scientifically complex.
The scientific uncertainty around bivalve sentience means welfare consideration is precautionary rather than established. Under uncertainty, minimising likely suffering costs little and could prevent substantial harm. Improving harvest and slaughter methods, even for potentially non-sentient animals, reflects responsible welfare science.
