Zoo Polar Bear Welfare in Warmer Climates

Polar bears in zoos face particular welfare challenges when housed in climates warmer than their Arctic habitat.

Key Facts

Polar bears have dense insulating fur and subcutaneous fat designed for Arctic cold
Stereotypic pacing is highly prevalent in polar bears and correlates with poor welfare
Large enclosures with pools, varied substrates and foraging enrichment reduce stereotypy
Temperature management through shaded pools and cool dens is essential in warm climates
Some zoos have phased out polar bear keeping due to welfare challenges in temperate settings

Welfare Considerations

Polar bears in warm climates face thermal stress, restricted natural behaviour and social isolation that frequently result in stereotypic behaviour patterns reflecting chronic poor welfare. The question of whether polar bears can be kept humanely in all climates deserves honest assessment. Where welfare cannot be achieved, phasing out the species from exhibition is appropriate.

What You Can Do

Support zoos that honestly assess polar bear welfare and make difficult exhibition decisions
Advocate for species-appropriate climate control in polar bear facilities
Donate to Arctic conservation that protects wild polar bear habitat
Engage with zoo accreditation bodies about minimum standards for polar bear welfare
