Sun bears are highly specialised foragers whose welfare in zoos depends critically on opportunities for natural foraging behaviour.
Sun bears with insufficient foraging stimulation develop severe stereotypic behaviours - repetitive pacing, head weaving and tongue stereotypies - indicating chronic frustration. Their specialised feeding anatomy means standard enrichment may be inadequate. Species-specific enrichment using termite mounds, hollow logs and honey provision is essential.
