Farmed rabbit welfare standards are being reformed in Europe, with cage-free systems offering significant improvements.
Farmed rabbits in wire battery cages experience restricted movement, inability to stand fully upright, hock dermatitis from wire floors, and complete prevention of natural behaviours including burrowing. Reformed housing systems with platforms, enrichment and litter enable significantly better welfare with manageable production cost increases.
