Cognitive dysfunction causes genuine distress in affected dogs - disorientation in familiar environments, disrupted sleep and loss of previously reliable behaviours are all welfare-relevant. Unrecognised CCD may be misinterpreted as behavioural problems and treated punitively. Recognition as a medical condition and appropriate management significantly improve quality of life.
