Welfare Considerations

Deer struck by vehicles suffer severe traumatic injuries - fractured limbs, spinal damage and internal haemorrhage. Many survive the initial impact and die slowly from injuries without intervention. Reducing collision frequency through speed management and crossing structures is the most effective welfare intervention.

What You Can Do

Slow down at dawn, dusk and in deer-rich habitats, especially in autumn
Use full beam headlights where possible to improve deer detection time
Report road-struck deer to police (if blocking road) or local deer management groups
Support wildlife crossing installation on roads identified as deer collision hotspots
