Farmed Pig Castration Alternatives Progress

Progress toward eliminating surgical piglet castration through immunocastration and intact male production is accelerating.

Key Facts

Immunocastration (Improvac) eliminates boar taint hormones during a brief period before slaughter
Intact male production requires slaughter before puberty to avoid boar taint
Electronic nose technology for boar taint detection at slaughter enables intact male lines
Consumer acceptance of immunocastrated pork is growing in education-supported markets
Several major European retailers have committed to eliminating surgical castration from their supply chains

Welfare Considerations

Surgical castration without anaesthesia causes acute pain that immunocastration and intact male production entirely avoid. The industry transition is driven by both welfare advocacy and consumer pressure. Technologies that enable intact male or immunocastrated production without quality compromise make the welfare case economically straightforward.

What You Can Do

Support retailers who have committed to eliminating surgical castration in pork supply chains
Choose pork products from immunocastrated or intact male certified sources
Advocate for legislative mandates for anaesthesia in surgical castration as a minimum standard
Support research into boar taint detection technology that enables intact male production
