African elephants are large-ranging animals whose welfare in captivity is profoundly affected by insufficient space for normal locomotion and social behaviour.
The spatial needs of African elephants cannot be adequately met in most zoo environments. Chronic foot disease, stereotypic behaviour, and reproductive failure indicate fundamental welfare deficits. The ethics of keeping African elephants in zoos are under serious scrutiny and several zoos have moved animals to larger sanctuaries.
