Japanese quail are farmed in large numbers for eggs and meat, often in conditions that severely restrict natural behaviour.
Quail farming welfare standards lag behind those for other poultry species. Wire floor caging causes chronic foot discomfort, and the absence of species-specific regulation leaves quail without welfare protections that chickens and turkeys nominally have. This is a significant regulatory gap.
