Zoo Wolverine Welfare and Space Needs

Wolverines are wide-ranging mustelids with large territorial requirements that present serious welfare challenges in captivity.

Key Facts

Wild wolverines may have home ranges of several hundred square kilometres
Wolverines are solitary except during breeding season
Captive wolverines show high rates of stereotypic pacing and route-tracing
Complex terrain, varied substrate, and prey-enrichment feeding are essential
Very few zoos worldwide maintain wolverines and welfare standards vary enormously

Welfare Considerations

Wolverines in captivity that cannot express their wide-ranging, exploratory nature suffer significant welfare deficits. Stereotypic pacing indicates chronic frustration with insufficient space and complexity. Very few zoological institutions have the capacity to meet wolverine welfare needs, and the case for keeping this species in captivity deserves serious scrutiny.
