Induced moulting of laying hens extends their laying period but the methods used have significant welfare implications.
Hens subjected to feed withdrawal moulting experience prolonged hunger that constitutes a significant welfare harm. Low-nutrient dietary methods achieve the same production outcome without enforced starvation. The availability of welfare-positive alternatives makes continued use of feed withdrawal moulting difficult to justify.
