Gorillas in the wild spend the majority of their waking hours foraging, and enrichment that mimics this behaviour is essential for captive welfare.
Gorillas without adequate foraging opportunities suffer from behavioural underoccupation and psychological frustration. The daily feeding regime in gorilla enclosures should be designed to occupy a large portion of the day through multiple small feeding events, scatter feeding, puzzle devices, and seasonal browse. Foraging enrichment is fundamental, not optional.
