Andean condors are among the largest flying birds and participate in zoo conservation breeding programmes that have supported wild population recovery.
Condors kept in undersized aviaries cannot exercise their full flight capacity, affecting physical conditioning before release. Welfare-centred breeding programmes use puppet-rearing, large flight aviaries, and appropriate social housing to produce individuals capable of surviving in the wild. Released birds must encounter only lead-free carcasses to survive.
