Harvesting catfish from grow-out ponds involves crowding, handling, and transport that cause acute welfare challenges.
Catfish crowded during seining experience oxygen stress and physical injury from net entanglement and crowding. The welfare of catfish at harvest has received little systematic attention in most producing countries. Improving harvest methods to reduce crowding duration and severity, and adopting effective stunning before killing, are achievable welfare improvements.
