Wild Merlin Moorland Welfare

Merlins are the UK's smallest falcon, breeding on upland moorland and facing welfare challenges from habitat degradation and persecution.

Key Facts

Merlin populations declined by 30% between 1970 and 2020 in the UK
They nest on open moorland and require heather-dominated habitats
Prey includes small passerines and meadow pipits taken in aerial pursuit
Merlin nests at ground level are vulnerable to predation and disturbance
Illegal persecution on some grouse moors remains a concern

Welfare Considerations

Merlin chicks at ground-level nests are directly vulnerable to predation, disturbance, and illegal persecution. Upland habitat management that maintains diverse heather moorland supports merlin breeding welfare. Reducing illegal raptor persecution is essential for merlin population welfare across their range.
