Novelty and complexity in enrichment provision are important for maintaining long-term engagement by pigs who habituate to familiar objects.
Providing the same enrichment object permanently has limited welfare value once habituation occurs. Rotating enrichment, providing novel materials, and increasing complexity over time maintains the welfare benefit of enrichment throughout the production period. Enrichment programmes should be actively managed rather than installed and left.
