Kingfishers are highly vulnerable to cold winters when rivers freeze, preventing fishing and causing rapid starvation.
Kingfishers unable to reach unfrozen water in hard winters starve within days - one of the fastest welfare declines of any UK bird. When rivers freeze, individuals must travel to find open water or die. Hard winter mortality is largely unavoidable but post-winter population recovery is supported by maintaining good river quality and nest bank availability.
