Sand lizards are one of the UK's rarest reptiles, restricted to southern heathlands and dune systems with very specific welfare requirements.
Sand lizard eggs buried in inadequately warm sand fail to develop, causing reproductive failure without direct individual suffering. Adults displaced from limited basking habitat cannot thermoregulate effectively. Heathland management creating bare sandy patches with nearby dense vegetation is the fundamental welfare intervention for this rare species.
