Cattle are highly social animals and isolation from conspecifics causes significant stress and welfare harm, particularly in young calves.
Cattle isolated from their social group experience acute and chronic stress proportional to the degree of separation. Even visual contact with other cattle significantly reduces isolation stress. Housing design for individual management should incorporate visual contact to minimise welfare harm of necessary isolation.
