Providing positive experiences for pigs - not just preventing harm - is increasingly recognised as essential for high welfare.
High welfare for pigs means creating conditions for positive experiences, not merely preventing suffering. Pigs that engage in play, explore their environment, and have positive interactions with stockpeople have demonstrably better welfare states than those who merely avoid pain. Stockmanship quality and environmental design both shape the frequency of positive experiences.
