Linnets are farmland seed-eaters that have declined severely with agricultural intensification, and their welfare depends on weedy arable habitats.
Linnets without adequate seed food in winter face starvation during cold spells. Individual birds in areas with only intensively managed arable land have chronically reduced body condition. Restoring weedy margins, winter seed crops, and scrubby nesting habitat directly improves linnet welfare and population health.
