A synthesis of the most evidence-based welfare interventions for dairy and beef cattle based on the current state of the science.
The evidence base for cattle welfare improvement is substantial and growing. Core evidence-based interventions include cubicle design for lameness, pasture access for natural behaviour, transition period nutrition, social housing for calves, and electronic monitoring for disease detection. Applying available knowledge consistently would substantially improve the welfare of cattle across the UK.
