Minke whales are increasingly recorded entangled in static fishing gear around UK coasts, causing serious welfare harm and occasionally death.
Entanglement causes prolonged welfare harm including rope lacerations, exhaustion from dragging gear, and restricted feeding ability. Disentanglement operations, while life-saving, also cause acute stress from approach and handling. Prevention through modified gear including weak links and reduced rope lengths represents the most welfare-positive approach.
