Red pandas are highly specialized arboreal mammals whose welfare in captivity depends critically on appropriate climbing structures, thermal management, and enrichment opportunities.
Red pandas are particularly vulnerable to heat stress and stereotypic behaviour in inadequate enclosures. Well-designed habitats with naturalistic climbing opportunities, appropriate cool temperatures, and behavioural enrichment significantly improve welfare indicators including activity budgets and stress hormone levels.
