Water quality parameters are fundamental determinants of welfare outcomes for farmed shrimp, with poor management causing widespread suffering in intensive systems.
Shrimp experience physiological stress responses that are welfare-relevant across a range of adverse water quality conditions. Hypoxia in particular causes distress that is rapid and severe. Given the enormous numbers of shrimp produced globally, improving water quality management represents one of the largest potential welfare gains in animal agriculture.
