Foot disease is one of the leading causes of euthanasia in zoo elephants, and substrate management is the most critical preventive factor.
Chronic foot disease causes progressive pain and mobility restriction that fundamentally impairs welfare. Elephants with severe foot disease cannot engage in natural behaviours, socialise adequately, or explore their environment. Substrate replacement from concrete to natural materials is the single most impactful welfare improvement available to facilities maintaining elephants.
