European eel aquaculture presents unique welfare challenges given the species' ecological crisis and poorly understood requirements in intensive production systems.
Farmed European eels are wild-caught critically endangered animals placed into intensive systems whose welfare requirements are poorly understood. The ethical burden of this system is high - the species is endangered, captive breeding is unavailable, and basic welfare standards do not exist for this significant aquaculture sector. Investment in both welfare research and captive breeding development is urgently needed.
