Lion social structure in captivity requires careful management to provide stable prides while preventing the serious aggression that can arise from incompatible group composition.
Lion welfare is inherently social, requiring stable group compositions that allow natural social behaviours including communal cub rearing, coordinated play, and social grooming. Poorly managed pride compositions cause chronic stress and serious injury from aggression. The most welfare-positive lion facilities maintain stable groups with minimal disruptive introductions.
