Stone curlews are ground-nesting birds of open arable land that have benefited from specific agri-environment management linked to intensive monitoring.
Stone curlew conservation demonstrates that highly targeted, partnership-based management can reverse serious welfare decline. Individual stone curlew nests in unprotected fields face high failure rates from agricultural operations. Nest protection combined with agri-environment management has substantially improved survival of both eggs and chicks across the UK population.
