Zoo Lion-Tailed Macaque Welfare

Lion-tailed macaques are endangered primates from the Western Ghats of India, with welfare in captivity requiring complex social groups and appropriate foraging enrichment.

Key Facts

Lion-tailed macaques live in multi-male, multi-female groups in wild forest habitats
They are highly arboreal and require extensive three-dimensional climbing space
Their endangered status with fewer than 4,000 wild individuals makes breeding programme welfare critical
They spend much of their active time foraging for fruit, seeds, and invertebrates
Grooming and social behaviour are central to group cohesion and individual welfare

Welfare Considerations

Lion-tailed macaque welfare depends on stable, appropriately structured social groups with extensive vertical space and complex foraging opportunities. Isolated or pair-housed individuals are deprived of the rich social environment that defines their species. Conservation breeding programmes must maintain high welfare standards throughout lifetime management to ensure captive animals contribute to recovery plans.
