The welfare of farmed shrimp at slaughter is a largely neglected issue despite the enormous numbers involved globally.
The welfare status of shrimp at slaughter is uncertain but the precautionary principle and their legal recognition as potentially sentient animals warrants consideration. The scale of shrimp production - billions of animals - means even small improvements in slaughter welfare have enormous aggregate impact. Developing and validating humane slaughter methods for shrimp and incorporating them into certification requirements is an urgent welfare priority.
